How to Plant Blazing Star (Liatris)

Plant blazing star bulbs in early spring, about 5 inches deep and 6–8 inches apart, in full sun and well-drained soil. Tall purple spikes bloom from the top down in summer.

When to plant
Early spring, as soon as the ground can be worked
Depth
About 5 inches
Spacing
6–8 inches apart
Sun
Full sun; tolerates light shade
Water
Water regularly through the first growing season; after that it's fairly drought tolerant
Soil
Well-drained; bulbs rot in soil that stays wet, especially in winter

Step by step

  1. If you can't plant within a few weeks, store the bulbs in the refrigerator until planting day.
  2. Choose a spot in full sun with soil that drains well, especially over winter.
  3. Plant each bulb about 5 inches deep and 6–8 inches apart.
  4. Water well after planting.
  5. Keep watering through the first summer whenever the soil dries out.
  6. In very rich, moist soil the tall stems may flop, so put in stakes early if your soil is like that.

After bloom

Leave the stems standing after flowering. Songbirds eat the seeds through fall and winter, and stem-nesting bees use the hollow stems. Cut them down in early spring before new growth starts. About every 4 years, or when clumps get crowded, dig and divide them in spring just as the new leaves appear.
