How to Plant Hardy Geraniums

Plant hardy geranium (cranesbill) divisions with the crown at soil level, never deeper, in sun to part shade and soil that drains well.

How to Plant Hardy Geraniums
When to plant
Spring, or late summer to early fall at least 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes
Depth
Crown level with the soil surface; planting deeper invites crown rot
Spacing
12 inches to 3 feet apart, by the variety's spread
Sun
Full sun to part shade
Water
Keep well watered through the first growing season; established plants tolerate some drought
Soil
Moist but well-drained; good drainage keeps plants long-lived

Step by step

  1. Choose a spot in full sun to part shade with soil that drains well.
  2. Loosen the soil and work in some compost.
  3. Set each division with the crown level with the soil surface, not below it.
  4. Space plants 12 inches to 3 feet apart, closer for compact varieties and wider for the big spreaders.
  5. Firm the soil and water thoroughly.
  6. Keep new plantings well watered through their whole first season.

After bloom

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more. Some varieties, including bloody cranesbill, rebloom through summer. Divide clumps in spring or late summer when they outgrow their space or thin out in the middle.
