How to Plant Crocosmia

Plant crocosmia bulbs in spring after frost, about 5 inches deep and 4–8 inches apart, in full sun and soil that doesn't dry out.

How to Plant Crocosmia
When to plant
Spring, after frost danger, once soil and air have warmed
Depth
About 5 inches deep
Spacing
4–8 inches apart
Sun
Full sun; afternoon shade in hot climates
Water
Even moisture; don't let the soil dry out
Soil
Well-drained loam rich in organic matter, pH 6.0–8.0

Step by step

  1. Wait until frost is past and the soil has warmed.
  2. Choose a warm, sunny spot with rich soil that stays moist but drains well.
  3. Plant bulbs pointed end up, about 5 inches deep.
  4. Space them 4–8 inches apart, in groups for the best show.
  5. Water in, then keep the soil evenly moist through the season.
  6. Spread organic mulch around the plants to hold moisture. Dry soil reduces flowering.

After bloom

No need to deadhead. Leave the foliage until it dies down, then cut it back in late fall or early spring. In zones colder than 6, lift the bulbs in fall and store them in peat or vermiculite at 35–41°F, or cover the bed with a thick layer of compost in late fall. Every 3–4 years, dig and divide crowded clumps in early spring.
