How to Plant Astilbe

Plant astilbe with the crown level with the soil in part shade and rich soil that never dries out, 1–3 feet apart depending on the variety.

How to Plant Astilbe
When to plant
Spring, or late summer to early fall at least 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes
Depth
Crown level with the soil surface, at the depth it grew before
Spacing
1–3 feet apart, by the variety's size
Sun
Part shade; tolerates full shade with fewer flowers, or more sun only if the soil stays moist
Water
Daily for the first week or so, then consistent moisture; deep watering through hot months
Soil
Fertile, moist, humus-rich; any pH

Step by step

  1. Choose a spot in part shade, sheltered from extreme heat, with soil that holds moisture.
  2. Dig a hole slightly larger than the roots and work in compost.
  3. Spread the roots evenly and set the crown level with the soil surface.
  4. Work soil in between the roots, firm the planting area, and water to settle it. Top up with soil if it sinks.
  5. Mulch about 2 inches deep, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.
  6. Water daily for a week or so, then slowly cut back as the plant settles in, checking that the soil is moist before each watering.
  7. Keep new plantings well watered through the whole first season.

After bloom

Leave some dried plumes on the plant for fall and winter interest. Spread compost around the base every year for better flowering. Feed in early spring only if needed, and go easy; too much fertilizer gives weak, floppy stems. Divide clumps every 3–6 years in early spring, as the foliage emerges.
