How to Plant Amaryllis Bulbs

Pot your amaryllis in a container just 1–2 inches wider than the bulb, with the top half of the bulb above the soil. Most bloom 6–8 weeks later, some varieties in 3–5 weeks.

When to plant
October through May. Pot about 6–8 weeks before you want flowers (some varieties need only 3–5 weeks; check your product page)
Depth
Top half of the bulb above the soil surface
Spacing
A pot about 1–2 inches wider than the bulb, with a drainage hole
Sun
Bright, sunny window
Water
Water thoroughly once, then keep barely moist until growth shows; water more often once the stalk is growing
Soil
Well-drained potting mix

Step by step

  1. If you can't pot your bulb right away, keep it cool, 40–50°F. A refrigerator vegetable drawer works, as long as it is away from food and fruit. If you see a sprout, pot it now.
  2. Choose a pot with a drainage hole, about 1–2 inches wider than the bulb.
  3. Hold the bulb so its roots hang down into the pot, and fill in around it with potting mix, firming as you go so no air pockets are left among the roots.
  4. Keep the top half of the bulb above the soil, and leave about an inch between the soil surface and the rim of the pot.
  5. Water thoroughly, let it drain, and empty the saucer. Then keep the mix just barely moist until you see growth.
  6. Set the pot somewhere bright and warm, 70–75°F, and give it a half turn every day or so once the stalk starts to lengthen so it grows straight.
  7. When the flowers open, move the pot somewhere a little cooler, 65–70°F, and they will last longer.

After bloom

When the last flower fades, cut the stalk 1–2 inches above the bulb but keep every leaf; the leaves rebuild the bulb. Keep it in your sunniest window, water when the mix starts to dry, and feed every 2–4 weeks with diluted houseplant fertilizer. From late May the pot can summer outdoors. In late September, stop watering and rest the bulb somewhere cool, 50–55°F, for at least 8–10 weeks. Then trim off the old leaves, freshen the mix, water once and start again for next year's flowers.
